Empowering Voices: How Advocacy Training is Transforming Women Leaders in Turkana’s Interior

At Building Livelihoods & Empowering Communities (BLEC), we believe that sustainable development begins when every member of the community has the confidence to speak up. Our mission to support "interior areas" reached a new milestone this month through our specialized Women Advocacy Training sessions.

For many women in remote regions, participating in local governance and community meetings can feel out of reach due to cultural barriers and a lack of formal rights literacy. Our recent training program was designed to bridge this gap, providing women with the tools to navigate legal frameworks and the confidence to take on leadership roles.

One of our participants shared a powerful reflection on her journey:

"The women advocacy training by BLEC helped me understand my rights and speak with confidence in community meetings. I now feel ready to represent other women and raise important issues. I appreciate BLEC for empowering us and supporting women leaders in interior areas."

Why This Matters

Social advocacy is the precursor to economic inclusion. When women understand their rights:

1.Representation Increases: Decisions in community barazas become more inclusive of women’s needs.

2.Economic Growth Follows: Informed leaders are better equipped to participate in trade and entrepreneurship, a goal we share with partners like the KNCCI Turkana Chapter.

3. Sustainable Change: Issues regarding healthcare, education, and water access are brought to the forefront by those who experience them most.

BLEC remains committed to empowering us all by supporting those who are ready to lead. We are not just building livelihoods; we are building the future of Turkana, one voice at a time.
